Airtel Kicks Off 3G Network Phase Out Process With Kolkata Circle The process of switching off the 3G network has already started with Kolkata in the recent-concluded June quarter. By September, the shut down will be affected in 6-7 more circles and between December and March the entire 3G network would be shut down, Gopal Vittal, CEO (India and South Asia), Bharti Airtel, said during the company’s post-earnings call. “Yes, we do see an upgrade when someone moves from 2G to 4G…On the spectrum, probably by April 2020, we will really have only 2G and 4G....

Bharti Airtel isn’t going to over-spend in the spectrum auctions for the 5G airwaves. Randeep Sekhon, in an interview to the Livemint, said that 100 MHz of 5G airwaves is an ideal number to start with. However, if the airwaves are too expensive, even 40 MHz to 60 MHz is enough to fulfil early demand for 5G services, added Sekhon. Further, Sekhon said that Airtel isn’t going to partner with Chinese vendors anymore for network technologies....

India’s second-largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, has partnered with Tejas Networks for expanding its optical network. Bharti Airtel has been making large strides in order to make its networks ready for 5G and also enhance its B2B and broadband services around the country. Under the deal, Tejas Networks will supply and install optical transmission network (OTN) for Bharti Airtel. This deal will help Airtel in extending Airtel’s optical network towards the edge and will also help with the 5G backhaul....
